Sunagakure is one of the five great ninja villages, and is the military force of Kaze no Kuni. After time, the village grew too large and too powerful for the Wind Country to control, so they instated a leader for the ninja of Suna. This leader was known as the Shodai Kazekage. During his reign, the village was both feared and respected. After nearly twenty years of strengthening his home, the Shodai retired, and a new Kage was selected. This would be the Nidaime Kazekage. Unlike his predecessor, he only made situations worse for Suna by creating bad relations with places like Konoha and Iwa, which supposedly led to his demise.
Just as the Sandaime Kazekage came, war ignited between the great ninja villages. Despite those troubled times, Suna had never been stronger. With ninja like Chiyo and Ebizo, and the strongest Kazekage the land had ever seen, Suna was flourishing. Once that war ended, however, the Sandaime mysteriously disappeared, and was never seen again. It would be discovered later that he was killed by one of his own nin, Sasori. This plunged the once mighty village into chaos. And to make things worse, a Daimyo of Kaze no Kuni began to rely more on Konoha than his own people. The Yondaime Kazekage then realized that they had to increase the quality of each ninja to maintain a military force. This resulted in the creation of another Jinchuuiki; Sabaku no Gaara.
Years later, Suna would join forces with a young village named Oto. Suna planned to launch an attack on Konoha, and with their victory show their Daimyo that he should rely only on Suna nin. The attack failed and it was discovered that the Lord of Oto, Orochimaru, had killed the Yondaime Kazekage some time ago and impersonated him for some time to make Suna act as he wished. With the failure of the attack and the death of the Yondaime Kazekage, Sunagakure re-allied with Konoha, and made Gaara the Godaime Kazekage.
The alliance with Konoha soon came in handy as two S classed criminals attacked Suna. The Godaime Kazekage faced off with one of them high above the village, and decided to save his village over himself as a true Kage would. He was captured by the criminals, but was soon saved by a team of Konoha and Suna nin. But not before his bijuu was extracted.
Suna went back to rebuilding its strength, using methods learned in its partnership with Konoha, in an attempt to rise to its previous levels of powerf. Just when they thought they had reached their goal, however, Iwagakure attacked for reasons unknown, followed by one of their ANBU attempting to assassinate the Kazekage. That is what ignited the war between the two great villages.
